- "I have promised too much," he said gloomily, one morning, as he came to Ruth, when she was busy cooking the dinner.
"I don't want you to be disappointed. So I must tell you Ruth, when I get among the fellows I feel I shant be able to stand, that I shall give way to drink."
"Oh," exclaimed Ruth,"You must not give way. Oh, Ned. you must not."
"But you cannot understand. They will wait for me at she "Blue Boar," I know myself be all right if I could have you with me, Ruth ; you seem to put strength into me somehow, but then I can't; No, I am afraid it is not to be done."
Ruth stood silently thinking, surely the brain, so accustomed to plan for her brother's benefit, could invent some way of helping him in the difficulty !
After, a long silent waiting during which Ned watched her face anxiously she spoke suddenly.
"Would it be any help to you, would you mind, if I were to meet you every afternoon for a time. You need not go with the others then, besides it would do me good to do so. I am inclined to stop indoors too much. No some would know my reason for coming. Shall I ?
"Its a capital plan. Good. But can you do it every day."
"I can if it will help you," answered Ruth with a smiling face.
Back to work went Ned, and when he came out of the mill at the end of the day, Ruth was waiting outside. He left his companions immediately and joins her, and no one knew, but that Ruth quite accidentally found herself in the neighborhood at that hour.
However there were some who noticed it ; and one young man sighed as he saw the pair go of together, and said to himself.
"Ned is turning over a new leaf, he's got some one to help him - one that will look after him. If I had such a sister may be I'd turn over a fresh leaf too."

Ruth et Ned sont deux frères et soeurs, orphelins depuis l'enfance, qui se sont toujours soutenus l'un l'autre. Ce soir-là, alors que Ned ne rentre pas, Ruth est très inquiète (plaques 1 à 3). Depuis peu son frère à de nouvelles fréquentations qui l'entraînent dans les bars et le poussent à boire (plaque 4). Cette fois-ci, les nouveaux amis de Ned sont obligés de porter le jeune homme chez lui (plaque 5). Ils raillent Ruth qui les sermonne pour leur conduite. Ils couchent Ned inconscient dans son lit (plaque 6). Ruth est très inquiète : son frère reste inconscient malgré les heures qui passent (plaque 7). Elle décide de faire venir le médecin, qui est très sceptique sur l'état du jeune Ned. Il a tant bu qu'il n'est pas sûr qu'il se réveillera. Il recommande à Ruth de bien veiller sur lui et de guetter le moindre changement d'état (plaque 8). Ruth reste alors au chevet de son Ned et prie pour son rétablissement (plaque 9). Enfin le jeune homme se réveille (plaque 10). Il a bien entendu les prières de sa soeur, mais il lui avoue qu'il est trop faible pour résister à l'appel de l'alcool et à ses amis qui l'entraînent dans les bars (plaque 11). Cela désole Ruth. Mais elle ne renonce pas. Grâce à son soutien, son frère résiste et ne boit plus (plaque 12 ici manquante, dont le texte d'accompagnement est présenté avec la plaque 11).
