L'enfant entend parler « d'un monde meilleur », ne comprenant pas de quoi il s'agit, il questionne sa mère à ce sujet (plaques 1 et 2). Les plaques 3 et 4 illustrent les propositions que fait l'enfant à ce sujet, les réponses de la mère ne venant qu'aux plaques 5 et 6. La conclusion du poème « It is there, it is there, my child, it is there 'tis there ! » [c'est là-bas, c'est là bas, mon enfant, c'est là bas, c'est là bas !] est clairement illustrée par la plaque numéro 7.
