Lantern Reading n°146 - livret
And so the poor dear little fellow is gone!
And yet when I think of that terrible stone,
Which I received the poor little chap in his fall,
There isn't much room left for wonder, at all.
Let me look at him, doctor, at least once more,
Ah! there is the look I have seen once before;
The same sweet confiding innocent look,
He had when his form from the river took.
Than back to the haunts of vice he should go;
Better far in Christ's fold to be gathered in,
Than again to revisit those dens of sin.
You'll wonder, perhaps, that I feel as I do;
But I heard him relate his tale of woe,
And saw the poor waif disappear our of sight,
Over the bridge, that bitter cold night.
I don't know whether you'll care to know
The poor lad's tale, but it moved me so,
I thought of the thousands in similar plight,
And longed for the power their wrongs to right;
I thought I might help in some humble way,
The demon, that causes these horrors, to lay,
And it may do the same to you very like,
When you hear the story of the poor crippled Mike
