Lantern Reading n°146 - livret
It was Christmas Eve, that season of joy,
When I first came across the poor little boy;
I chanced to be down on the bridge that night,
Watching the vessels, each one with its light;
They looked something like a moving town,
As they traversed the river up and down,
When through the murky air there seemed to skim,
The words of a beautiful Christmas hymn,
In one of the recesses, which abound
On the bridges that span the river I found,
Two poor little waifs of this wilderness wild,
One of the two little more than a child.
Cuddling close together, there they sat,
And unseen, I heard their innocent chat.
I learnt that elder one's name was Jack;
That he'd lived with his granny for some years back;
That the wretched old woman was steeped in sin,
And her only pleasure in life was gin,
Which Jack somehow or other, was forced to provide,
By doing odd jobs at the river-side.
By begging, by anything short of theft,
For Jack's integrity still was left;
His mother had thought him some years before,
That crime never bettered even the poor.
