Lantern Reading n°146 - livret
His forehead is cut, and bloom from it pours,
As we slowly enter the hospital doors,
Where every day in the year they pursue
A work that needs angel's hearts to do.
Into the hospital ward he was borne,
Where his worn out garments, dripping his torn,
Were gently removed with the most skilfust care,
While others a clean warm bath prepare;
And for the first time in his life he pressed
A little clean bed, in clean night clothes dressed.
But he lay unconscious the livelong night,
Unaware that kind hands and footsteps light
Were waiting and watching for life's first ray,
That they might his lightest wish obey;
For the poorest within those walls may depend
On finding in every nurse a friend.
Unconscious throughout the night he lay,
While the Church bells ushered in Christmas Day;
And the hospital inmates that morning bright,
Were clad in their garments clean and white,
Prepared to honour that holy day,
Whose memory ne'er shall fade away,
They mingled their voices, a joyous throng,
And sang so sweetly a Christmas song,
